About the Dykes Pedaling Bikes Ride

Hey women....here's your chance to meet other lesbians in a non-bar setting. Get outdoors and have fun!

Dykediva.com, Windy City Cycling ClubChicagoland Bicycle Federation, and the LCCP @ Howard Brown are hosting this summertime activity. Women of all skill levels are encouraged to join us for a ride down the lakefront to Hyde Park and back, with lunch in between. Boys are welcome, but this ride is all about the girls.

Remember, this is for ALL skill levels...from racers to those folks who haven't dusted off their bikes. It's about fun, socializing, exercise, and of course, an excuse to meet the girls.

Helmets are required.

The Start of the Ride

Riders meet at the totem pole (Lake Shore Path and Addison St.) around 8:45am on Saturday morning and leave promptly at 9:00am toward the south side.  At the totem pole, look for a group of cyclists, dressed casually (and stylishly).  The Frontrunners meet at 9:00am, so we’ll have plenty of GLBT presence.  If you’re coming in from the suburbs, there is parking nearby.

Queen’s Landing

Around 9:40am, we meet at Queen’s Landing downtown to pick up a few more riders (meet us there if you live downtown), and then it’s off to Hyde Park.  Queen’s Landing is on the lake shore path across from Buckingham Fountain.

Brunch in Hyde Park

Typically, we enjoy brunch at Medici’s on 57th Street (1327 E 57th St, Phone: 773-667-7394).  So if you want to join us at Medici’s we’ll arrive around 11:00am (give or take).  All riders should bring money for brunch.  The average entrée is under $8.

Back to the Totem Pole

After brunch we head back to the totem pole.  Some people break off along the way depending on where they live, but if you ride from the Totem Pole and back you’ve traveled about 25 miles.

Bring a Friend

We all understand that it’s hard sometimes to come to a group alone, that’s why we encourage everyone to bring friends.  Our recreational rides are meant to be social, so we strongly encourage everyone to come ready to meet someone.   The more cyclists…the merrier!

What about the Weather?

This recreational ride is usually a fair-weather ride, though sometimes you’ll find that really brave cyclist willing to ride in the rain. Just don’t ride in thunderstorms! We’ll never cancel, but the numbers tend to drop off in bad weather.

What Do I Bring?

1) Your bike! Any bike will do, this ride is a recreational pace (12-16mph). 2) All WCCC rides require a helmet. 3) Water bottle. 4) Bike lock. 5) It’s a good idea to bring materials to fix a flat. Usually there is a good-natured soul who will help you, but it’s good to be prepared.  6) Money for lunch or public transport. The path is fairly close to public transportation the entire route, so the CTA is always an option to get back if you’re too tired or your bike has malfunctioned. 7) A friend if you want, and 8) your desire to relax and have fun!
